Niko was an owner surrender. He had an extensive and vaguely defined autoimmune disorder that had resulted in numerous lesions. There was no part of his poor body that was spared from these sores-from his sad eyes to his puffy feet. Despite the pain he must have been in, he had the sweetest disposition. When he joined the program, we realized his chances of survival were slim, but we knew that we would do whatever we could for this boy!
He was taken to a BrightStar vet the day after he joined us. Unfortunately, in addition to the lesions, he also had advanced heartworm disease. We made the humane but still difficult choice to end his suffering and Niko joined his BrightStar brothers and sisters at the Rainbow Bridge.
In honor of Niko, and other dogs for whom we are their last chance at health, we have created this fund. This will allow us to continue to try to save the ones that others do not have the resources to rescue. We will use all donations, large and small to rehabilitate sick, starving, and suffering dogs in need.
From time to time, we are asked to help a dog that is in extremely poor health-most of the time it's physical, sometimes the dogs are emotionally abused and in need of a long term foster. It may be an owner surrender from an owner that is unable to maintain the dog, as was the case with Niko. Other times it may be a dog in a shelter that needs us, but is very ill. We will not turn away a dog that needs us, even if it is going to be an “expensive save. Your contribution will help these last chance dogs.
