Lexi, my three year old female GSD went for TDI(Therapy Dog International)training this morning. It has several "stations" that she has to pass in order to get her certification. While she was at one of the stations,"Meeting a Friendly Stranger" (the tester comes up to the dog and shakes the handler's hand and makes conversation then starts petting the dog etc), well Lexi didn't really want anything to do with her, she backed off and wouldn't let the person touch her. At that point, Rebecca (the tester) got 5-6 people out of the crowd to come and see Lexi's reaction with each of them. Well, she was fine with all of them. Then Rebecca came back to see how Lexi's reaction was and again she pulled away. We all then went outside to start up "the distractive crowd" station (by the way, I figured we were finished), at that point, Rebecca asked her husband to get her a banana out of the car to eat. The people came at her with walkers, canes and other things to see how'd she react. Rebecca once again approached Lexi and Lexi let her pet her this time. At that point, Rebecca turned to me and said I have a VERY SMART dog and a very rare dog. She feels she could become a "Diabetic Detention Dog" and has urged me to follow thru with that as well. You see, Rebecca is a diabetic and was going into low blood sugar mode and Lexi sensed it by the scent that she was giving off.
Lexi did get her certification and she now a TDI dog!!!!
Needless, to say, I am so very proud of my little girl!
