BrightStar is a German Shepherd Dog ("GSD") Rescue, and GSDs will always be our primary focus. Sometimes, we will take in other breeds: ones that we couldn't bear to leave in a shelter to an uncertain fate, or even ones that were supposed to be GSDs, until they arrived. The majority of our foster homes are most familiar with GSDs and GSD mixes. But we have a varied and caring group of fosters who won't turn away a dog in need. If a dog is in need, if we have the foster space, and if we have the breed-knowledge needed, we will take in any breed to find them their forever home.

* These are BrightStar dogs, and the same adoption policies and process apply.*
Kamoni

(Last Update 04-12-08)
Kamoni is quite the girl. She was saved from a shelter within a City that does not allow Pit Bulls. This was a situation of a very loved animal that was banned by a city ordinance.

Kamoni was an owner surrender. I can tell you that whomever owned her loved her a lot. They fell in love with her at the shelter and did everything in their power to save her. They all commented on how sweet this girl is, she just makes you smile.

She is now safe in her foster home in New York. She is so loveable and such a treat to have around. She is house trained. She also: sits, shakes, lies down, plays dead, and loves to "clean faces". She has no food issues and gets along with other dogs.

Kamoni has been around kids over 8 and did great. She loves puppies and has no problem with any specific people at this time. As for age, I think she's under 2 years old.

Kamoni is up to date on all vaccinations, spayed and will be heartworm tested and micro chipped. I will update more as I get to know Kamoni better.

Rocky
Available for Adoption
(Binghamton Area)
(Last Update 04-22-08)
Rocky is one of the nicest dogs I’ve ever fostered. Inexplicably, he hasn’t been adopted yet. I’ve had him six months so have really learned a lot about his personality.

His perfect forever home would use him as a therapy dog, he’s THAT great. He knows basic obedience, walks politely on a leash, is housetrained, crate trained, loves riding in the car, takes treats gently, loves everyone, and has absolutely no aggression issues. His calm demeanor makes him a wonderfully easy dog to live with. He is enormously social, but very polite in asking people for attention…and even though Rocky is a large dog at 97 lbs, his gentle nature encourages everyone to come over to him. He especially adores children. He has fit right in with my dogs, mostly rotti’s, two males and two females. He even does great with cats (he’s currently living with six), puppies and small dogs. A one pound pup at the pet store was attempting an escape and ran right to Rocky, who gave him a polite sniff and then sat waiting with the pup between his legs until the employee could grab it…he also managed to find the one child in the pet store and planted his butt right next to her and was happily doing the “rotti lean” asking her for a pet. I absolutely love this dog.

Rocky tested positive for lyme disease and although he was asymptomatic (had no symptoms), rescue opted to treat him with antibiotics. We believe Rocky to be a rotti/shep mix about six or seven years old. Typical of his breeds, he bonds closely to one person. Currently, I am Rocky’s person. Even when Rocky is enjoying being petted by my hubby, Rock’s eyes never leave me. He loves to be wherever I am (including the bathroom if I let him!)

He would be a great dog for a younger family with children. He’d be perfect for a family that has a lot of company as he’s never met “a stranger he doesn’t like”. An older family looking for a well behaved, calm dog would love Rocky. Or someone who wants a well behaved, dog friendly dog to take on walks. And I said before, if someone was interested in finding the perfect dog to take to nursing homes or hospitals as a therapy dog, Rocky would be a natural.

(Last Update 05-15-08)
I am Greta and I was pulled from a local shelter. All the volunteers at this shelter were just in love with me. I am a happy, happy girl with lots of energy but also like to just spend time with my people.

I am very dog friendly but have never met a cat. I am most definitely a "Diamond in the rough". I smile all the time and that causes everyone around me to smile too!!

I am probably about 1 1/2 yrs old, and weigh about 40 lbs. I am house trained but do try to "counter surf" when no one is looking.

I am ready for a home of my own. I love all the dogs and people here but I would really like my own person or family.

Greta is spayed, up to date on shots, micro-chipped, heart worm negative, house broken and crate trained.

Willow
Available for Adoption
(Rochester Area)
(Last Update 04-23-08)
Meet Willow! She is a 5 year old, 54 pound Purebred Siberian Husky with a lot of love to give! She LOVES attention and will snuggle up to you any chance she gets! Her coat is a beautiful blend of grey, white and tan which is referred to as "wolf grey". She has beautiful brown eyes with a black nose bar. She is past the puppy stage in her life, but don't a number fool you - she is FULL of energy and benefits from daily walks.

Willow does ok with other dogs as long as they understand she is an alpha female. She lives with 3 males and they let her rule the roost! She will have to meet any other dogs in the home prior to adoption to make sure they get along. Once she establishes herself she loves to get down and play with others.

She does have a HIGH prey drive when it comes to animals outdoors. She whines and wants to chase rabbits, squirrels etc so I will say NO small animals in the house for this girl. Siberians are typically not cat friendly but I will cat test her to see how she does.

Willow is a typical Siberian Husky so she will NEED to go to a home with a fenced in yard, the higher the better. She will try to run outdoors if you don't give her a firm command to "stay back". Huskies are known to be escape artists so we are requiring her to go to someone with Husky experience.

Willow does well in her crate, and she often sneaks away for a nap in her crate during the day. She will whine and "woo" when she is excited about something but otherwise she is fairly quiet.

She is up to date on vaccinations, micro chipped and spayed.

Willow is ready for her forever home!

Mardi Gras
Adoption Pending
(Rochester Area)
(Last Update 05-10-08)
Hi - My name is Mardi Gras! We think I am a Spaniel/American Bull Dog mix, but honestly it is just a guess. I have the softest coat!!!

Well, here is my story:
I was turned in to a high kill shelter in Tennessee at 15 weeks old. I was scheduled to be euthanized, when my wonderful guardian angel, Ms. Deva, saw my picture and just couldn't let that happen. So.... Ms. Deva paid my pull/vetting fee and then paid for me to be boarded at Ms. Kim's until a foster home opened up with BrightStar. I am told Ms. Deva is a wonderful lady who is a large supporter of BrightStar.

My foster mom and dad agreed to open their hearts and home to me, even though I am not a German Shepherd Dog (hehehe), but I am very sweet and loving.

I was named Mardi Gras, because I always have my party face on. I am a friendly, happy, playful girl. I get along very well with all dogs. My foster mom still needs to see how I am with kitties. I am learning manners too!! So this is all so fun.

I am now about 6 months old, spayed, UTD on shots, on heartworm preventative, house and crate trained and microchipped!!! I weighed in at the vet at 44 pounds on 03/27/08.

04/30/08 Update: Mardi Gras was tested with a dog savvy cat and she passed with flying colors. In fact, she went and sat right next to our nice tester cat (also a rescue), on her cat bed!! She did want to chase Ms. Cat, but only to play. She did very very well!!

Mardi Gras' foster Dad was so proud of her!

Moon
Available for Adoption
(Rochester Area)
(Last Update 05-15-08)
Hi, I am Moon, guess I was named that becasue I am white.

I am a 7 month old "SPECIAL NEEDS" puppy. I am almost totally deaf. I hear some but not as well as I should.

I am a real snuggle bunny and just adore people. I appear to be a real mix of things. I look sort of like a Pit but I am not, I have a very soft velvety coat and many, many wrinkles under my chin. I also have a bit of blue in one of my eyes so I look pretty "cool".

I lost my happy home because my Dad ended up in the big house, he was a bad boy I guess. I ended up in a shelter all alone.

I really need a perosn or family that wants to snuggle with me. I also want to sleep right next to my person. I am not a needy dog but I just adore people and snuggling. I am about 35 lbs right now and will grow a bit more.

I do have a "bad" habit, or so I am told, I like to look and see what is on the kitchen counters. I am also a bit mouthy but we are working on that too. It only happens when I get very excited.

I am good with other dogs but can be pushy sometimes. I have to try and keep myself in check! I am almost totally house broken and am all set for my new home.

I am spayed, up to date on shots, heart worm negative and micro chipped.
