UPDATE ATTENTION!!!!

PLEASE HELP!

** GERDA **

Gerda is a beautiful 2 year old female with special needs.
Gerda is a very sweet girl that requires major surgery on her left rear leg. Possibly amputation.
She needs your generous donations to fund her costly procedure, so she can have the opportunity of a new start in a forever home.

**7/11/10 UPDATE**
As everyone knows, Greta came into Brightstar with a bad back leg. She didn't use it for walking and when she would run it literally got in her way because the leg didn't bend. After a light rain Greta would come into the house and fall repeatedly because that leg was wet and it just made her slip and slide all over. After a few vet visits, Dr. Jim and I agreed that Greta's quality of life was lessened by this "bad" leg. We decided that amputating the leg would be a blessing for her rather than a burden. Let me tell you, I did second guess myself when she was at the vet having the surgery. But I said if she were my dog, I would have the same surgery done. But the minute I saw her after surgery, I knew the right decision had been made. She walked out of that vet with her tail wagging, hopping at full speed at a fast trot almost as fast as my horses trot! Even going back to the vet for a check up, she was happy to walk inside, almost like she wanted to say..."Hey, look at me, I'm doing so much better and I'm so happy!". So if someone is looking for a super super lovey dog then this girl is for you!
She wakes up giving kisses and goes to bed giving kisses. She really is an angel wearing a GSD fur coat!

UPDATED POST SURGERY PICS!!

**UPDATE 8/23/10** GRETA (fka Gerda) Made a suprise visit to BrightStars Annual Barn Sale to say hi to all her friends from BrightStar and bargan hunters. As you can see she is doing just great and is totally healed. She is ready to find her new forever home!
Because of the urgency of Greta's "aka Gerda" condition, her procedure was performed quickly to save her life. We still need to pay for her surgery! Please use the following Chip-In link to make your generous contributions and help us reach our goal that has given Greta a 2nd chance at life.

Go to our Females for Adoption page to see Greta's(aka Gerda) bio and the long list of generous Guardian Angels that have donated so far!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

So many people are losing or have lost their homes and need to find new homes for their pets as well as themselves. The shelters are overloaded with dogs who have been turned in by their families or just abandoned in homes that their families can no longer afford. We have always relied so much on our generous supporters. We and the dogs need your help now more than ever so that we can continue to help all these deserving dogs that have ended up in the shelters through no fault of their own. If you have the time and the space and live in the Western New York area, we are in need of foster homes.
More information can be found on the Foster A Dog page.

Which one do we want to adopt?

BrightStar is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based out of Rochester, NY dedicated to saving the lives of German Shepherd Dogs. Every year BrightStar helps hundreds of homeless German Shepherds find new forever homes. Visit our "How Are We Doing" page for our exact placement statistics. BrightStar is a dedicated team of experienced owners, handlers, trainers and breed fanciers that have one common goal....

SAVING THE LIVES OF GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS

When BrightStar accepts a German Shepherd Dog (GSD) into our rescue, we make a commitment to that dog to make sure that it will be happy and healthy for the rest of its long life. In placing our dogs with their new forever families, we have a lengthy Adoption Process to assure the quality and commitment of each home. Before adoption, most of our dogs live in foster homes where they live as part of the family, being socialized, trained, loved and spoiled until adoption. Our dedicated team of volunteers is what makes us able to save so many lives. New Team Members, Sponsors, and Foster Families are always needed and VERY WELCOMED! Our dogs receive the best of Veterinary Care; including spaying and neutering.
The adoption fee for a dog is $325.

We receive our GSDs mostly from animal shelters, other rescue organizations, breeders and individuals that for one reason or another cannot keep their dogs. Visit our Where Do We Get our Dogs page for more information.

According to the US Humane Society, every year between six and eight million, dogs and cats enter U.S. shelters; three to four million of these animals are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them. Twenty-five percent of all the animals entering shelters are purebreds. That is approximately 450,000 purebred dogs in our shelters EVERY YEAR. According to AKC 2003 registrations, German Shepherds are the 4th most popular breed in the US. In 2003, 43,950 or 4.8% of all AKC registered dogs were German Shepherds. Many of the 450,000 dogs in our US shelters every year are purebred GERMAN SHEPHERDS...and thousands do not make it out of the shelter alive!
